MID-PROJECT EVALUATION

Mid- Project Evaluation

Discuss what you intended to do as part of the project, has the idea changed ?

I intended to portray the theme of travel in my project by shooting various different locations, sometimes including the mode of transport and journey of getting to the destination. I still intend to carry on with my idea however now focusing more on the individual city and towns. I plan on continuing to do more shoots on this whilst keeping within the theme of my project.

What shoots were must successful ?

So far I feel that my most successful shoots are 2 and 4. I think I think I produced a strong series of landscapes especially in shoot 2 which included my seascapes. I enjoyed experimenting with black and white and adjusting the exposure, although in the end I decided to stick to the majority of my edits being in colour and increasing the saturation. Shoot 4 I think was successful as it identified travellers before going on a journey pre destination. Although some of the images showed movement within, I actually really liked this technique and intend to do a shoot based upon the image I had took creating more like this.

What aspect of the work requires improvement e.g - shoot... technique

Aspects of my work that I feel require more improvement are certain points of analysis. I feel there are certain shoots that need to be written up more in depth including more detailed analysis of settings and techniques. I also feel that i want to incorporate a shoot where the location is accessible enough to use a tripod, therefore hopefully improving the stability of the photos I am producing.

Where do you see the work progressing - future shoots you would like to do

I see my work progressing more towards more shoots based on cities and towns as previously mentioned above. For future shoots I intend to shoot architecture in London, possibly including the subject of tourists or people. I also would like to do a separate shoot of a train station taking images of trains from the outside and within and then to experiment within black and white.

WORK RECORD 4

Plans for shoot - In this shoot I intend to capture lifestyle and atmosphere of arriving to an airport. I intend to capture families as they set off ready to bored a plane and the excitement that it brings. I will again not be able to use a tripod due to the location of the shoot.

Research influences-

Garry Winogrand

Born in New York 1928, this was where Winogrand lived and worked most of his life. Best known for his portrayal of U.S life he focused on The visual elements of city streets, people, rodeos, airports and animals in zoos. These subjects are part of his most influential work and within his lifetime he received many grantsincluding several Guggenheim Fellowships and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.

Images that require improvement -

A01- My work has developed from my artist research as he captured a series of photos where he explored an airport terminal. Although his photos ranged from around the 60s-80s. I wanted to try and resemble his work by also looking at an airport terminal. However, due to security being much stricter now than in the past there was only so much I could take images of.

A02- In this shoot I used a DSLR canon to capture my images. I switched this into manual mode and adjusted the settings accordingly. I then took my best images and edited these in photoshop by adjusting the image to a 90 degree angle to straighten the image so any lines in the image laid horizontally due to not being able to use a tripod which had caused the images to become slightly out of angle. I then also converted some images into black and white to resemble my artist research and made sure to adjust the exposure and the tones by using curves. With the images I left in colour I then adjusted the saturation and again used curves to make certain features within the image stand out more.

A03- My idea for capturing travel within this shoot was to look at 'the process of getting to a destination' when looking at travelling abroad everyone has to go through an airport if they want to travel on a plane. Therefore, I wanted to capture the place itself including peoples emotions and expressions when travelling away and how they may feel before hand. I think one my best images was of the outside airport terminal. This was due to the fact that I felt it had a good amount of light exposure and it was in focus when the image had been taken. However when looking at some of my images of improvement there was a image where the picture had been out of focus due to the shutter speed at the time of the moving subjects, although this I had put under an image of improvement and I had not intended on this to happen, I did  feel that it actually made quite an interesting photo and I would like to do a shoot purely based on having the subjects moving.

A04- I personally believe this shoot represents a part of travel based on the fact that travel isn't just about the destination but also involves what you do to get there. I think my artist research had also been really relevant to this shoot and enabled me to know what types of images I wanted to capture and I what I intended my outcome to look like.

Progression -

In my following shoot I intend to look at another location, this time I want to focus on a big town or city. I will most likely take photos of London looking at the touristic aspects. This will include people, souvenirs and the architecture. I will make sure to focus on specific imagery to get a clear bold photo

WORK RECORD 3

Plans for shoot -

In this shoot I intend to capture planes from an outsiders perspective. This means I will be capturing images of planes as they are going to take off and land whilst flying through the air. Due to the location of this shoot I will be unable to use a tripod Therefore I may need to adjust and straighten some of the images when editing them.

Research Influences -

Katsuhiko Tokunaga

Born in 1957, Tokunaga is a Japanese military aviation photographer who specialises in capturing planes in flight. He works for a late number of aircraft manufacturers

Images that need improvement -

A01 - I developed my work based on the research of Tokunaga because I wanted to use a photographer who had captured images of planes as a part of their work. By looking at his work and how he focused on military aircraft I decided that I wanted to take a slightly different approach and in fact just focus on planes in general. Taking off and landing. This meant I created a series of my own work that was originally based upon how he had captured planes within flight.

A02 - In this shoot I used a canon dslr and shot in manual mode. I again didn't use a tripod due to location of the shoot, however when editing the images within photoshop I used the grid tool to make sure my final images where straight and in line. I then also edited out using the spot healing brush tool to remove the lamppost that had got in the shot.

A03 - My idea to record travel for this shoot was to look at planes in flight from an outsiders view. I believe I effectively completed this by using my camera in manual mode so when the planes took off and came into land I could adjust the aperture accordingly. Some of my images however did turn out slightly blurry due to the movement of the plane, although I did find that I managed to capture some planes precisely in my best images. One of my favourite images was actually of the cargo plane which I thought looked effective due to the angle it was taken at, this did however need some editing within photoshop as the exposure was quite low.

A04 - I believe that by exploring this aspect of taking images I have created a personal response that is relevant to my study, this being because part of travel is transport, so within my portfolio I want to develop a series if images that include how you may travel. Therefore, by studying the flight of aircrafts this is seen as a form of transport used when travelling.

Progression -

In my next shoot, I am going to look at subjects in the location of an airport, this will be tricky due to certain aspects of security within the airport as some areas may be restricted. I will make sure to angle my camera effectively to capture their facial expressions and reactions to travel.
